Conversations with the Moon
Whether the Moon provides wonder, comfort, questions or uncertainty, it is there for us to observe and contemplate, and to ultimately converse with. The following work studies represent an ongoing study of my own conversations with Earth's satellite, with space travel, NASA, interplanetary speculation and questions of time, space and existence.
Moon in Motion uses the concepts of time, movement and human interference to visually manipulate and obscure what we would otherwise see. The Moon was photographed using a combination of long exposures and physical movement of the camera, resulting in a triptych; three iterations of the same subject with three different visual endpoints. In the blur of motion that materializes, a feeling is represented instead of an obvious subject. This feeling stimulates the individual imagination, leaving room for questions and conversations, and for seeing what the mind chooses to see.

In Eclipse, time is studied through a series of photographs taken during a rare total eclipse of the Moon in perigee. There is a slow and deliberate observation of the passing of time through the transition of the Earth’s shadow on the lunar surface. In this instance, the camera and photographer do not necessarily interfere. They stay still - the shutter is instantaneous, like the blink of an eye, as it captures the movement and passage of time. The appearance of the Moon changes throughout this shadow phase, from full, to partial eclipse, to blood red and back again, all within 3 hours and 17 minutes.
